Son and pupil of the painter Carlo Alberto Baratta (1754 -1815), Francesco then studied for some years in Rome in the workshop of Vincenzo Camuccini. Returning to Genoa in 1827, the painter became director of the painting school at the Accademia Ligustica. Although formed in the late Roman neoclassicism, Baratta then joined the Romanticism.
