CARL VON MARR
Milwaukee 1858 - Munich 1936

A German-American painter, renowned for incorporating religious and mythological themes into his work, Carl von Marr was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He trained with several painters, including Henry Vianden, Martin Schaub, Karl Gussow, and Otto Seitz, in cities such as Milwaukee, Weimar, and Berlin. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. As a student, Carl von Marr achieved incredible success and won a sketch competition at the Academy. Von Marr rose to fame with his painting The Flagellants, also considered his masterpiece. He received widespread acclaim for his paintings, teaching, and curating numerous international exhibitions. Marr's versatility was evident in a variety of styles, including academic realism, impressionism, symbolism, and decorative arts, among others.
Carl von Marr began painting landscapes and scenes of peasants at work. Initially using a dark palette, he created numerous depictions of religious figures and later turned to mythological subjects. Over time, Marr explored other styles and adopted a brighter palette, with a wider color range. From portraits of people to paintings of cats, Marr perfected the art of creating a delicate atmosphere in his works.
Carl von Marr was an award-winning artist whose works were exhibited internationally in numerous museums. He also curated numerous exhibitions. He was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts and also served as a professor at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Carl von Marr lived and worked in Munich until his death.
