MARCO ALVISE PITTERI
Venice 1702 - 1786

Marco Alvise Pitteri was an Italian engraver of the late Baroque period in his native Venice. He is said to have trained under Giovanni Antonio Faldoni. He gradually perfected his technique until he achieved a high position in the field of engraving. Pitteri developed an original method of engraving, using parallel lines, which are thickened at regular intervals along their length with more deeply engraved sections. He only rarely produced works of his own invention. His production also includes book illustrations, for which he relied on the major masters of 18th century Venetian painting, such as Giambattista Piazzetta, with whom he created several series of engravings. He later produced a large number of works based on paintings by Pietro Longhi.
