Giandomenico Tiepolo, the patron saints of the family Crotta

Etching and engraving, c. 1750, after Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Succi 1986, 41. A very good impression of the second state of four, with large margins. A few stains at the margins, but generally in very good condition. To the plate-mark 265 x 370 mm, the entire sheet measuring 365 x 510 mm.
PROVENANCE: the Milanese painter Ernesto Fontana (1837-1918): his blind stamp on the top margin.
The print reproduces the painting (before 1750) by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo which is now at the St├Ądelsches Kunstinstitut in Frankfurt and was in the Venetian Palace Calbo Crotta until 1912.

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo trained in the studio of his famous father, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and was independently producing works for his own commissions by the age of twenty. He continued to work with his father while at times executing his own designs, until his father's death in 1770. Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo began etching when he was a teenager. He devoted much time to etching and became an accomplished master of both reproductive and original prints. His reproductive work after paintings by both his father and himself, is analogous to a skilful translation from one language to another. He replicated the feeling of the original without slavishly copying its appearance. His technique respected rather than trying to minimize, the inherent differences between painted and printed images.
