LODEWIJK TOEPUT called POZZOSERRATO (Anversa or Malines c. 1550 – Treviso 1604/5) MOUNTAINOUS RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH BRIDGE AND TOWN ON THE BACKGROUND
Pen and brown ink, washed in brown. 190 x 124 mm.

Lodewijk Toeput, called in Italy Ludovico Pozzoserrato, was a Flemish painter and draughtsman, active in Italy. He was apparently a pupil of Marten de Vos and went to Italy in the 1570's. Pozzoserrato is known to have assisted with Hoefnagel's series of townscapes entitled Civitates Orbis Terrarum, published by Braun and Hogenberg in six volumes between 1572 and 1618. In Venice he presumably joined Tintoretto's workshop. Pozzoserrato was in Florence in the late 1570s and visited Rome in 1581; by February 1582 he is documented in Treviso, near Venice, where he settled. See Domenico Luciani and Stefania Mason Rinaldi (editors), Toeput a Treviso, Ludovico Pozzoserrato, Lodewijk Toeput, pittore neerlandese nella civiltà veneta del tardo Cinquecento, Treviso-Asolo 1988.
