Umberto Milani, fighting boxers

Black chalk, 222 x 303 mm. Signed MILANI at bottom right.

A sculptor and painter, Umberto Milani attended, at the Brera Academy, the classes of the scuola del marmo under Adolfo Wildt. There he met Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti and Luigi Broggini. He was also influenced by Arturo Martini. At his debut his works were figurative, but in the forties Milani updated his style on Cubism, which was embraced by the younger generation. In 1947 he began to create abstract paintings with the dripping technique and, soon after, his sculptures move toward abstract images and forms. In 1958 and 1962 Milani had a solo show at the Venice Biennale.
