LOMBARD ARTIST, first half of the 17th century THE FLAGELLATION
Black and red chalk, stumped, over blue-gray paper; 342 x 236 mm. Watermark letters Z and C surmounted by a trefoil, in an oval, similar to Briquet 9722. Inventory numbers in pencil at bottom right.
The subject of this drawing is the same of a small sketch in pen sold at Christie's, Paris, on 29 March 2012 (sale 3523, Dessins Anciens et du XIXème Siècle, lot 12). The drawing was sold as Attribue a Daniele Crespi. Edoardo Testori kindly suggests for our drawing as for the one sold in Paris a tentative attribution to the Maestro del San Sebastiano Monti, an artist near to Daniele Crespi and probably of the same age.
