Hasui, rain at Shinagawa

Colour woodblock print, 1931, from the series Selection of Views of the Tokaido. Signed Hasui, red sui seal. Very good impression, with the Watanabe '6mm' seal used between 1946 and 1957. Very good colours and condition. 'Oban', 390 x 260 mm.

Hasui Kawase is one of the best known artists of the Shin Hanga (new prints) movement. His prints, landscapes and townviews, were created in traditional Japanese style with Western elements. The majority of his prints were published by Watanabe Shozaburo, although the artist also worked for several others publishers, briefly. Hasui was a real master of landscape prints. Famous are his night scene prints and the designs showing snow fall or rain. Like no other artist he was capable of creating moods, strange and eerie feelings, with his designs.
