Basically a self-taught artist, Guarino has been engaged in painting, sculpture and graphic humor. As a painter has done creative work in Europe and the United States, where he lived for part of the sixties. In the seventies Guarino collaborated with the team of Franco Basaglia, for the closure of asylums and the opening of regional mental health centers, putting his art at the service of the movement of Democratic Psychiatry. In spite of his age he still works for the Il Corriere della Sera and almost every day he draws the little sketch inserted in Sergio Romano’s page Lettere al Corriere.
