Born in Osaka Gakutei was the illegitimate son of a samurai who served under the Tokugawa shogunate. His mother later married into the Yashima clan, explaining the artist's name. In his lifetime Gakutei was better known as a poet and writer, but in the history of Ukiyo-e he is celebrated as a follower of Hokusai and Hokkei who designed splendid surimonos.
