Domenico Maria Fratta, two standing soldiers

lente

DOMENICO MARIA FRATTA (Bologna 1711 - 1763) TWO STANDING SOLDIERS
Pen and brown ink over traces in black chalk. On the verso sketch of a soldier and of a turbaned man; 90 x 42 mm. PROVENANCE: Giuseppe Vallardi, 1784-1863 (Lugt 1223); Carlo Prayer, 1826-1900 (Lugt 2044); Bernasconi Family (inscription on the verso); private collection, Milan.

Domenico Maria Fratta studied in Bologna, under Domenico Maria Viani and Carlo Antonio Rambaldi and then under Creti, in the house of the Count Fava. Dissatisfied with his achievements as a painter, Fratta soon specialized in the graphic arts, making etchings himself and, mostly, executing the preparatory drawings for etchings which were produced by other artists, such as Francesco Domenico Francia, Domenico Mattioli and Giuseppe Filosi. An excellent draftsman, he was influenced in this art by Creti, and his best drawings are often confused for the works of his master.
