Placido Fabris, an angel heals the wounds of St. Sebastian

PLACIDO FABRIS (Pieve d'Alpago (Belluno) 1802 – Venice 1859) AN ANGEL HEALS THE WOUNDS OF ST. SEBASTIAN
Black chalk, signed and dated in pen Placido inv. 1820; 110 x 125 mm.

A brilliant student, along with M. Grigoletti, of T. Matteini, at the Academy of Venice, Fabris received prizes and awards from the Academy in the years 1819 and 1822. His authentic vocation as painter is revealed in the portraits more than in the mythological compositions. The artist was widely renowned and he received copious requests not only from the Italian customers. He also worked for Tsar Nicholas I, who ordered the copy of a painting of Titian, executed in 1847. His indefatigable activity was also partially addressed to the restoration of old paintings. His artistic language was international, influenced by English Romanticism and Neoclassicism.
