A painter, illustrator and designer, Marcello Dudovich is considered one of the progenitors of Italian poster design. After attending a professional art school in his hometown Trieste, he moved to Milan in 1897, here beginning his brilliant career as one of the most acclaimed advertising poster artists of his time. In 1900 he was awarded the gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and in 1920 and 1922 he participated in the Biennale of Venice. He worked for the luxury Italian department stores 'La Rinascente' in Milan and 'Le Mele' in Naples, and, in 1930, he designed a famous poster for Pirelli. After the Second World War Dudovich moved away from the world of commercial art, concentrating instead on painting.
