lente

GIANNI DOVA (Rome 1925 - Pisa 1991) UNTITLED
Colour etching with aquatint. Printed on Arches. Signed in pencil Gianni Dova and numbered XIII/XXX. Blind stamp IL CIGNO STAMPERIA D'ARTE. Full margins, minor defects at the margins. To the platemark 425 x 420 mm, the entire sheet measuring 750 x 560 mm.

A painter, sculptor and printmaker, Dova was born in Rome but studied in Milan, at the Brera, under Carpi, Carrà and Funi. In 1947 he had his first solo exhibitions in Milan and Venice. He was one of the co-signers of the manifesto ‘Oltre Guernica’ in 1946 and adhered to the 'Spazialismo' movement of Lucio Fontana. From this period he participated in numerous collective and international exhibitions. In the early fifties he painted works with flowing films of paint evocative of galactic space or of organisms seen under a microscope. Became, then, interested in Surrealism through the writings of Breton and the work of Ernst, Lam, Matta and Brauner, and turned to painting compositions with enamel-like finish of part-animal, part-vegetable forms.
