Andrea De Lione, a sheet of studies

lente

Attributed to ANDREA DE LIONE (Naples 1610 - 1675) A SHEET OF STUDIES. ON THE RECTO SKETCH OF A LANDSCAPE WITH TWO TREES. ON THE VERSO: STUDIES OF HEADS AND FIGURES
Red chalk on the recto; pen, brown ink and black chalk on the verso. 142 x 210 mm.
A tentative attribution, founded on the strong similarities between the landscape drawn here and the handling of the red chalk in a few drawings by De Lione in that medium (i.e. this red chalk drawing in the NGA).
The turbaned male head on the verso also, reminiscent of the oriental heads by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, suggests the name of the Neapolitan artist, who was, in the thirties, strongly influenced by il Grechetto, as by Poussin.
My warmest thanks to Miriam di Penta, who kindly spent a couple of hours of her time offering me some hints about the knowledge of di Leone's draughtsmanship, a topic still to be explored deeply.

De Dominici's biography presents Andrea De Lione as a complex artist who studied with both the late Mannerist Belisario Corenzio and the more modern Aniello Falcone, who knew how to make the most of different artistic contexts, and who was equally at home with drawing, painting and fresco. In his long career (De Lione died at the age of seventy-five) he was in contact with Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione for at least 25 years, exchanging with him subjects and images.
