Almost forgotten in our days, according to Guido Giubbini Alfonso Bignami was perhaps the most important of the Italian etchers of the decade '65 -75 (forse il piĆ¹ importante degli acquafortisti italiani del decennio '65-75) He was born in Bologna, lived mostly in Florence, but his artistic career as a printmaker took place basically in Turin. In Turin Bignami attended the Accademia Albertina and, under the influence of Fontanesi and of the French etchers, he learned the techniques of printmaking. He moved to Florence between 1869 and 1870, and joined the Macchiaioli group, spreading among them the technique of etching. Bignami stopped his artistic career around 1877.
